Where to Place a Home Security Camera: 6 Best Spots
A security camera is only as good as its view. Whether you are using a dedicated camera or an old phone running iCameraPlus, placement makes the difference between useful footage and a wall of blur. Here are the six spots that matter most.
1. The front door
Most break-ins and most deliveries happen at the front door. A camera with a clear view here is the single most valuable one you can set up.
2. Back and side entrances
Doors that are out of sight from the street are exactly where intruders prefer to enter. Cover them.
3. The main living area
An interior camera overlooking the living room captures anyone who does get inside, and doubles as a pet camera during the day.
4. Ground-floor windows
Large, accessible windows are a common entry point. Angle a camera so it sees both the window and the room.
5. The driveway or entrance
A camera facing the driveway records vehicles and anyone approaching, and can capture number plates in good light.
6. Any blind spot
Walk your property and note where you cannot see. Old phones are perfect here — set up a second or third one to cover the gaps at no extra cost.
Placement tips
- Mount high and angle down to widen the view and stay out of reach.
- Avoid pointing straight at bright windows, which can wash out the image.
- Keep the lens clean and the phone charging.
- For privacy and the law, only record areas you own and avoid neighbours' private spaces.
With a few old phones placed well, you can cover an entire home for free. See our home security camera guide to set each one up.
