How to Keep an Old Phone Recording 24/7 as a Security Camera

An old phone makes a great security camera — but only if it keeps recording reliably, day and night. The good news is that a phone is built to run for years; it just needs the right setup to record 24/7 without overheating or running flat. Here is how.

Keep it plugged in — always

Continuous recording uses power constantly, so a battery alone will not last a full day. Place the phone next to a power outlet and leave it on the charger permanently. Modern phones are designed to sit on a charger indefinitely, so this is safe for long-term use.

Reduce heat

Recording and charging both generate a little heat. To keep the phone cool and stable:

  • Take the case off — a bare phone dissipates heat far better.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and hot spots like on top of a router or radiator.
  • Give it some airflow; do not bury it in a drawer or tight enclosure.
  • Lower the recording resolution if the room does not need full HD — less processing means less heat.

Dim the screen to save power

You do not need the screen on while it records. With iCameraPlus you can turn on screen dimming, so the display goes dark while recording continues. This lowers heat, saves power and stops the phone from lighting up the room at night.

Use a stable connection

Footage is uploaded to your cloud archive continuously, so a steady internet connection matters. Keep the phone within good Wi-Fi range, or use a phone with a data SIM if it will sit somewhere without Wi-Fi. If the connection drops, the app keeps recording and resumes uploading when it returns.

Let loop recording handle storage

You never have to manage storage by hand. When the cloud archive fills up, the oldest clips are deleted automatically so new recordings continue without interruption — that is what makes true 24/7 recording possible.

A quick checklist

  • Phone on a charger, case off, out of the sun
  • Screen dimming on
  • Good Wi-Fi or a data SIM
  • Recording started — that is it

Set up this way, an old phone will happily record around the clock for months. If you have not set one up yet, start with our step-by-step guide, or see all the other ways to reuse an old phone.
